Scanning a stack twice, once for each side, gives one file holding all the fronts followed by all the backs. Page two of the document sits halfway down, which makes it unreadable until the pages are put back in order.
The first half is treated as the fronts and the second half as the backs. Those backs are usually in reverse order, and that setting is on by default.
Put pages one to eight in the feeder face up. The scanner takes the fronts in order: one, three, five, seven. Now lift the stack out and turn it over to scan the other side.
The sheet now sitting on top is the one that was at the bottom. So the backs come through as eight, six, four, two, which is reverse order. Nothing has gone wrong. It is simply what happens when you flip a stack.
That is why the reverse setting is ticked by default. If your scanner or feeder already handles it, untick it and the pages are taken in the order they appear.
