A home printer cannot print anything bigger than A4, but a poster, a floor plan, or a banner can be printed in pieces and joined. This works out which piece goes on which sheet.

It repeats a strip of the image at the edges so neighbouring sheets share some content. That gives you something to line up against and somewhere to put the tape. Without it the edges have to meet exactly, which is fiddly.
Text and shapes that are drawn rather than photographed stay sharp at any size, because they are instructions rather than pixels. Photographs inside the document are a different matter, and a small photo blown up across four sheets will look soft.
