Bates numbering puts a unique stamp on every page of a set of documents, usually a code followed by a number that runs on without resetting. Legal work depends on it, because it means any page in a case can be pointed to exactly and without confusion.
The number carries on across files rather than starting again in each one. Page forty of the second document might be ABC000187, and that number belongs to that page alone for the life of the case.
Page numbers restart at one in every document. That is what you want for a report, where page five means the fifth page of that report.
Bates numbers do the opposite. They run continuously across every document in a set, so the number identifies a page within the whole case rather than within one file. If you want ordinary page numbers, the Add Page Numbers tool is the one you want.
A unique stamp on every page of a set of documents, usually a code followed by a number that runs on without resetting. Legal and medical work depends on it, because it means any page in a case can be pointed to exactly.
Page numbers start again at one in every document. Bates numbers carry on across all of them, so page forty of the second file might be ABC000187. That is the whole point: the number identifies a page within the case, not within a file.
Set the start number to whatever comes next. If your last file ended at ABC000420, start this one at 421 with the same prefix and digit count.
So the number stays readable. Without it, a stamp landing on top of a dark image or a table border disappears, and an unreadable Bates number defeats the purpose. The box is slightly see through so it stays discreet.
Not with this tool. The numbers are drawn onto the pages as part of the content. Keep your original file if you might need a clean copy.
